Unable to send from the hotel

I'm using a new MacBook computer, and when I'm traveling and using the WiFi in hotels or, recently, in a vacation home, I can go online and receive emails. However I can't send emails--none of them go. Unfortunately, I didn't make a note of the error message.
The guy at Apple said that if I could get into my Mail Configuration and change a setting which was likely set to 25 to 587 it might resolve the problem. If anyone has a clue about this I'd greatly appreciate it.

The settings depend on your ISP. For example, I use worldnet.att.net. They
require different servers when you are not directly connected to their
network, e.g., in a hotel. I'd recommend contacting your ISP and finding out
what settings they require. You can usually find that on a support page on
their web site.

If you want to try changing the setting, try the following:
- Go to Tools -> Accounts
- Edit the relevant account
- Click on Advanced SMTP settings
- Enter 587 in the box for Override Default SMTP port

Good luck.

Have you checked with your ISP to see if you need to configure your email
client for "Outgoing SMTP Authentication"? The ISP may require you to enter
a username/password to use their mail servers to send emails if you're not
using their internet conection.

Changing port form 25 to 587, or enabling SSL (both these are relative to
your "Outgoing SMTP Server" settings) could indeed help in case port 25 is
blocked by whatever provider you are using to have internet access while
away from home.
