Unable to send mails

hi all

im using microsoft entourage 2004 on my mac powerbook g4. since 2days while
sending mails im getting the error which says

" Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't support any of the
available authentication methods. Error: -17897 "

But if i receive mails first and then send then sending mails works.

is anybody there who can help me on this or who had the same problem and got
it resolved.

This is an old and discredited method of authentication called 'pop before
smtp'. Entourage doesn't directly support it, the work round is to check
mail first, then send.
