Unexpectedly Quits - ONE SOLUTION

B

Beech

To all having "Entourage Unexpectedly Quit when receiving email"
issue:

Add my name to the list of "Unexpectly Quit" users in Entourage.
However, I have FOUND A WAY to restore it to working condition. I
can't make any promises, but it did the job for me.

Facts in brief:
Running Mac OS 10.2.8 on a G4 laptop.
Version of Entourage is 10.1.4
Symtom: "Out of the blue", Entourage now quits when it is sent to
retrieve mail from POP email service.

Things tried first:
1) Repair permissions on boot disk using Apple Disk Utility.
2) Perform "Typical" rebuild of database in Entourage.
3) Perform "Advanced" rebuild of database in Entourage.
4) Trashed Entourage preference file.
5) Re-boot, re-boot, and re-boot again.

All were no-go on the problem but I list them here in case they were
in some way part of my solution.

Then I noticed that Entourage was quitting when it searched for emails
in only a single one of the 4 email accounts for which it was set up
to automatically go to. I could access that email account using other
email programs so I knew the email account was valid and working on
the server end.

Then I trashed the ACCOUNT ITSELF in Entourage. (After carefully
noting all the settings and passwords, etc.) After quitting Entourage
and re-starting the program, I put the "new" email account back into
Entourage and TA-DA! It's working now as it always has.

I was quite relieved to see I didn't have to re-install the app! Hope
this works for you too.

Thank you for your detailed eMail with all the alternatives (tried
them as well). The only question I have is how were you able to
disable certain eMail accounts, when Entourage does not stay up to let
you update those accounts?

That will help me fix (I hope) the same problem.

Thx,
Zion

Zion:

I, too had Entourage pre-set to "Receive Mail" from all accounts "At
Startup". Of course with the problem Entourage would quit before you
knew what was going on.

To work around this, as Entourage is starting, have your mouse at the
ready to CLICK AND HOLD on Tools in the top menu bar (you might
have to try one or two times). Then navigate to Tools, Schedules; or
Tools, Run Schedule, Edit Schedules. This will prevent the program
from immediately running off to download emails and then quitting.

Then simply uncheck the enable box for whichever of your schedule
items is the one that tells the program to get email at start up. Now, if
you have more than one account, you should be able to determine
which one is causing the problem by getting email from each using
Tools, Send and Receive, (account name).

Take note of the account setup parameters, delete the account, re-start
Entourage (it won't go for emails now), put the account info back in,
check to see if it works individually, and re-check the enabled box
back under Schedules.

I hope this works for you.

Another way to quickly stop whatever is going on at any given time is the
old "apple - period" combination. You may have to do it several times
successively depending on how many email accounts you have set up.
