Unkown error (-8770)

I have no idea why I keep getting this error, but it's driving me
nuts. I just got Office 2004 and and new Macbook Pro. The Macbook
Pro had Test drive on it which I used for about two weeks...you know,
getting to know Entourage, etc. Everything was working fine. Then I
decided to get the full version. I did and installed it, but now I
keep getting this error. If I send or reply to an email without
attachements, or meetings, or anything like that, I can use
entourage. But if I send a meeting or attach a document, I get the
error message.

I've tried uniinstalling and re-installing about 3 times already.
Other weird behavior:

- The icons in the upper left corner of entourage are gone...there are
some weird symbols that look like a Quicktime symbol with a question
mark, but all black. If I minimize the icons in the Preferences
window, they look fine.
- The weird symbol/graphic I just mentioned above shows up when I open
Word or Excel in the "Choose Template" box.
- The Office Setup Assistant never did work. I just double-clicked on
it and nothing ever happened. I did this a million times before
finally just dragging the Microsoft Office 2004 Folder to my
Applications folder.

I've looked everywhere for answers. Can anyone help?

Thanks.

You did not remove the Test Drive properly; not doing so is known to cause
very strange things to happen. What you need to do now:

* locate the Remove Office application in Applications/Microsoft Office
2004/Additional Tools/Remove Office and drag it to the desktop.
* double-click it and tell it to remove every version of Office it
encounters.
* after it has done its job, you can delete the application.
* reinstall Office 2004 from the CD, then apply all the latest updates.

At that point, everything should be back to normal again. Also, don't worry
about losing your Entourage data, the uninstaller does not delete it. If the
problem persists, post back again.

Thanks for the help. I've tried un-installing and re-installing, but
that does not work. I still can send and receive if the emails are
just text. If they include an attachment or a meeting request, then I
get this error.

Anybody seen this before?

No.

I¹m going to suggest something radical. Erase your hard drive. Install the
OS and update using Apple¹s combo updater. Run Software updater for other
updates not covered by combo. Install Office from CD and update with 11.3.5
updater. Restart, run Repair Permissions. Copy back your data files and you
should be running without any problem.

I hate to suggest such a radical move, but it might be less time consuming
than chasing down all of your problems.

Extra but worth the effort:

1. Install the OS but do not update.

2. Create a Sandbox----One of the backup applications, SuperDuper! Has an
option to create what the author calls a ³sandbox².
<http://www.shirt-pocket.com/>

A Sandbox is a bootable copy of your system, stored on another hard drive or
partition, that shares your personal documents and data with the original.
With SuperDuper!, you actually use the Sandbox as your startup volume. You
can safely install any system updates, drivers or programs in the Sandbox,
without worrying about what might happen to your system. If anything goes
wrong, you can simply start up from the original system. SuperDuper! has
preserved it in its original, pre-disaster state but all your new and
changed personal documents are totally up to date. Within minutes, you're up
and running again without having to go through a difficult and
time-consuming restore process.

3. You are booted into the sandbox, now install the Apple combo updater and
then run the software update for other updates that might be needed. If
there is a problem with the update, you just boot back into the original.
It¹s easy to create a new sandbox and update again.

4. When you create a sandbox, It uses _your_ applications that were
installed in the original volume. Since you are specifically having problems
with Office, I suggest you install Office only in the Sandbox for now.

After you install the base Office, zip it using the contextual menu ³Create
archive of xxx². Update Office. If the update is problematic, you can delete
it and revert to the zipped copy.

Once you are satisfied with your updates you can use SuperDuper to Smart
Update your original volume.

Since the sandbox uses the same User¹s folder all of your data is there an
up-to-date useable User¹s folder no matter which volume you are booted from.
The beauty of this system is it allows you to easily revert to an install
that you know works. You install in the sandbox where you can play with a
system update without permanently installing it on your system.

SuperDuper! Is $27.95. I¹m not affiliated with the product. Just a satisfied
user.
