Unlinked Files Report -- Possible Thread Duplication

My apologies if I'm duplicating another thread, but I'll be danged if I
can find it.

In another recent thread somebody was as advised to Recalculate
Hyperlinks, then view the Unlinked Files report and delete them. Well,
recalculated hyperlinks, but the unlinked files reports shows many files
that do not have a zero in the "Links to" or "Links from" columns.

This confuses me. Why would files that are linked show on the unlinked
files report? I, too, would like to clean up the site but don't trust
the report.

Thanks,

The unlinked files report shows all files that cannot be reached using
normal links from the Home page (the links may route through several
pages, but start at Home). Normal links include those that take the
form <a href="page.htm">text</a> or <img src="file.gif">, and exclude
files linked by JavaScript, or other means.
The important points here are "linked from the Home page", and exclude
JavaScript links.
The Unlinked Files report should be used carefully.

Thank you for the clarification. Is there a report in FP that can
identify truly extraneous files that would be candidates for deletion,
or is that an impractical request because of the various ways one can
eventually get to a page or file?

Thanks,
Randy Morgan

There is no easy way to determine if a page is truly unlinked, unless
you *know* how your web is constructed. If you know there are no
links through JavaScript or some other scripting (server-side or
client-side) the unlinked files report is good - otherwise use that
report as a guide, but check each page carefully, especially those
that have links to them.
