unlock word

on my laptop the word document has locked. none has locked it and it apears
to have locked itself which is, needless to say, very annoying.
ive attempted the "help...activate prodect option" but it has produced no
help.
ive also searched through all your sugestions and again, nothing has worked.
could you please explain the nature of the problem and a suitable way of
rectifying it.
the problem is also affecting my microsoft powerpint proggramme.
