Unlocking Subdocuments

The subdocuments in my master document have gotten locked. I've tried
everything. Set the same track changes settings, security settings, none of
the files are read only or locked by other users...but they're still locked
in the master document. What am I doing wrong? I get an error message saying
that the protection settings are not the same. I don't know what else to do.
Please help.

Start over with a new Master Document file - created from the common template
(you DID create all the documents from a common template, right?) - and insert
the sub-documents again. A Master Doc is always a "throw away" file.
