Unread Emails Marked As Read

When I download email messages from my ISP server to Entourage, messages
often (and randomly) appear as "read" messages, even though I have not
opened them and have disable "mark messages as read when viewed in preview
screen". This is frustrating, because I end up missing new messages ...
anyone have any suggestions?

Have you any rules running that mark as read/unread? Junk mail rules?

Have you any rules running that mark as read/unread? Junk mail rules?

Both my wife and I use the same computer, so I have 3 rules that separate
emails into our own personal inbox folders (the 1st rule moves my messages
to my inbox, the 2nd moves her messages to her inbox and the 3rd rule sends
messages to both (when we are both recipients). However, none of those rules
contain instructions to mark as read/unread. I also have a junk mail rule,
which takes junk mail identified by the filter, changes the category to
"junk", marks the message as read and moves the message to a "deleted junk
mail" folder.

Your question raises an interesting point, though. One way that I could
solve the problem would be to add a command to my non-junk rules to mark the
messages as unread after they are moved to our personal folders. However, it
doesn't solve the problem of why it is happening.

I have intermittently had the same problem. What I have noticed is that
sometimes newly received messages take on the attributes of the topmost,
previously received message in the Inbox. If the earlier message has been
read and/or marked for deletion, the new message may become so as well.

This only happens a small percentage of the time, but enough to be become a
real annoyance for me. I think it is more likely to happen when Entourage
is not the front-most application.

I run Entourage 10.1.4 (030702) on OS 10.2.8 on a G4 laptop. My mail account
is IMAP. I believe I noticed this problem for the first time when I
switched to Entourage version that included an Exchange capability.

Hi Greg,

Does it happen every time?

This could happen if Entourage preferences are corrupted.

Try deleting Entourage preferences file and relaunching Entourage. The path
for entourage preferences is
Harddisk>Users>HomeFolder>Library>Preferences>Microsoft>Entourage
Preferences.

Prior to this you can create a new user and configure your account in the
new user and check. This way you can eliminate all other possibilities.

If it works fine in the new user then you can try logging in the Existing
user and try removing Entourage preferences and check.

Regards,

Prasanna.
