Unwanted conversion of dates to numbers in Excel

I have a cell in Excel formatted to hold dates in "yyyy" format but if I
enter a year it interprets it as a number and converts it to another
incorrect date, e.g. I type in "2000" and it displays "1905", storing it as
22/06/1905 behind the scenes. Is there a way to stop this happening? It
must be a date field and it must display as "yyyy".

There is no facility that I can find to enter the year part of the date
only.. if you look at the examples of date formats allowed, year only isn't
one of them.. a regular numeric box will do that..
