Upgrade to 2008 hoses stored email

I kept a backup of my database file (its about 8.4G); entourage
prompted me to rebuild database. Now, it has pretty much removed all
but todays email from my exchange server inbox and has been slowly
clearing email on the exchange server from my saved older email files.
Thing is, I can see that the size of the database is growing, it is
now at 9.6G.

any idea whats going on? the state of the Exchange server dominates,
so if I reload saved email it will sync to the current statehow do I
restore to the local copy of exchange and then sync to the server?

what would happen if I tried to run a rebuild on the current DB?

The E-mail store that is identified by Entourage as the *more recent*
E-mail store will take precedence. It's not always Exchange.

If your identity contains only an Exchange account and no POP or IMAP
accounts then I recommend *never* repairing the Entourage database just
because you don't know the nature of the damage. If data changes in
Entourage then those changes will take precedence and synchronize to
Exchange.

The fact that the database is growing is a red herring. Databases grow
dynamically but do *not* shrink dynamically. You may very well have a
Database file that's mostly empty.

I suggest immediately setting Entourage to work offline (Entourage -->
Work Offline) to stop synchronization.

Then use Entourage --> Switch Identity... to create a new identity (new
uncorrupt database). Set up your Exchange account again and allow your
mail to synchronzie completely.

Assess what's missing or changed. Missing items can probably be
recovered using Outlook Web Access (OWA). Log in and select Options on
the left. At the bottom you can recover deleted messages. If you can
recover from there then do so and they will begin to synchronize to
Entourage.

If you can't find any messages then you'll need to rely on your Exchange
Server administrator to restore your account from backups.

Archived messages that you've moved into the folders "On My Computer" in
your old identity can be exported to a .rge file and then imported into
your new identity. Unfortunately, rules, signatures and preferences will
have to be manually recreated. Screen shots come in handy for this.

Hope this helps!

I have found that you can drag over the Rules and Signature files from an
old Identity. You will have to reset all of your Rules destination folder,
but it's easier than starting from scratch.
