Every time I startup Entourage I has to waiting until Office upgrade identities and messages.
After years of using Microsoft Office I am seriously thinking to drop it, not upgrade any more and migrate all my offices need to another more reliable and lest intrusive solution.
In the mean time, does any body now what is going on? I am afraid I will be stick with this problem until I change suite.
Thanks.

I started a thread on this a couple of days ago and I have seen others too.
I have posted on other MS boards but they dont even recognize it as a
problem because not all people suffer from the problem.

I have converted to thunderbird (for ever, or for a while depends on how
quick they will fix it)
Entourage is the main reason for me to buy office and therefore I will stay
with openoffice and thunderbird from now on, if I dont see a solution very
soon.

So i am guessing this is a wide spread problem?

Please define wide spread. I would say the majority of users do not
experience the problem. The fix works for most of the users that do
experience the problem. Generally, I have found that once the user reads the
Dos and Don'ts for a good install, they find the solution.

I wrote "solution" not "cause"
If it is corrupt then it corrupt it self every day over and over again
despite databasemaintanance and firewall editing and repaired rights...

All these word semantics are making this conversation confusing. Let's try
to solve the problem. Is this still happening? Have you tried:

1) Create a new Identity in Entourage.
2) Enter account info and select to "leave on server"
3) Downloads some emails
4) Quit Entourage and see if this Identity does the same upgrading

Does this happen in a new Identity? If yes and rebuilding does not fix it,
then you will need to manually move your data over into the new Identity.

Yes I have done all of this and yes the problem is still there.
If I create a new identity it doesnt always upgrade at the first reboot but
it seems like it decides to do it when the database has been growing of a
certain size. For example I can have the new install working until I make
som major changes (like importing old mail or importing calendar events)

I move my computer from work to home and it usually happens when I get home
and fire up the computer after work (when I leave home for work I just put
it to sleep and that doesnt trigger the upgrade)

I'm stumped! Generally, once the problem is fixed it doesn't start up
again.

Me too! While using 12.1.2 the problem suddenly disappeared after Apple's latest Security Update.

But yesterday my computer was updated to 12.1.3 by Microsoft AutoUpdate and the problem is here again. But now it is even worse. Before, the upgrade thing happened after a restart or after switching computers. Now, the problem is triggered after a simple logout/login....

Entourage is the only reason I buy the Office-Stuff, so I really do care. But if the problem isn't fixed anytime soon, my patience is getting exhausted.

Do you have more than one copy of Office installed? I have two on backup
drives. I'm still getting the message that Office needs to be updated
because I have not booted over to update them.

Only a handful of folks are experiencing the problem. The problem usually is
a result of some kind of modification to the system.

I know your frustration is very high and will do whatever I can to help.

Did you create a new Identity and test? This would eliminate your Identity.
Did you test in a new User with a new Identity?
Do you have a second drive that you can install the OS and Office to test?

Lest get real Bente: Although I appreciate very much your intention to help, you are asking me to do the job others in "Microsoft" should do. I am the customer, I paid for a software that is not working as it suppose to do, that is not performing at the level of the Operating System I am working on.
One more thing, this is the only program in my possession that is causing troubles, that not let me work properly. My fault! I should migrate long time ago!

I see you started this thread and then it was hijacked by others who
asked for help with their own situation.

Have you read the suggestions in this thread and tried to fix your
problem? Specifically, what have you yourself tried? What were the
results? The more you communicate with us the better we can help you.

Found this thread with a google search.

Just want to say, that I have the same issue with rebuilding the identity regularly on restart or logout/login.

I've seen it on all computers with Office 2008 that I have access to (about 8) and all had different Office 2004 databases migrated from, so it is very unlikely it is some "old corruption" transferred over from the 2004 database.

The hint to start with clean database in 2008 and manually move messages doesn't fix the problem. It reoccurs after some time.

It could probably be related to caching mails when using IMAP accounts, but I'm not sure for that. But that could be a reason, why not everybody is seeing the issue.

As a consequence I reverted to Office 2004, which btw. not only has no issues with periodic identity upgrades but also works nicely with Spaces, while Office 2008 can drive you crazy with unintended switching of the current space. But that is another story.

Sad I've spent the money for the update and cannot use it due to bugs still not fixed after 9 month since the release of Office 2008. :-(

This problem occurred in our office on several machines, Entourgrage 12.1.4 and 12.1.3 on system 10.5.5. Deleting the Entourage Preference Files in the Microsoft Folder in the user Library Preferences got rid of the problem (for now?)
