Upgrading problem with Office 2004 Mac

I bought the upgrade version of Office 2004 Mac because I have on my old
computer Office 98 but I don't have the CD. Now I can't install the upgrade
because it's looking for the old program. What can I do, short of buying the
complete standard Office

This problem happens quite frequently. Unfortunately you need that disk.
That screen where you click "I Agree" says:

UPGRADES. To use Software identified as an upgrade, you must first be
licensed for the software identified by Microsoft as eligible for the
upgrade. After installing the upgrade, you may no longer use the original
software that formed the basis for your upgrade eligibility, except as part
of the upgraded software.

and

SOFTWARE TRANSFER. Internal. You may transfer your copy of the Software to
a different device. After the transfer, you must completely remove the
Software from the former device. Transfer to Third Party. If you are the
person who initially licensed the Software, you may make a one-time
permanent transfer of this EULA, Software and Certificate of Authenticity
(if applicable) to another end user, provided that you do not retain any
copies of the Software. This transfer must include all of the Software
(including all component parts, the media and printed materials, any
upgrades, this EULA, and, if applicable, the Certificate of Authenticity).
The transfer may not be an indirect transfer, such as a consignment. Prior
to the transfer, the end user receiving the Software must agree to all the
EULA terms.

What it all boils down to is if you don't have the software, you can't use
it.

Thanks for your answer. I am the orignal software owner of the old Office 98
so that's not an issue. I just can't find the disc due to moves. Can I call
Microsoft and give them the old number and get authorization to use the new
program?

It's not a matter of just typing in a number. You need the disk and I
*really* doubt that MS will have that disc around any longer. You can't even
get replacement discs for Office 2000 any longer.

I know what you mean about things disappearing during moves but I think it's
time to start opening boxes. If your stuff is anything like mine, you too
have boxes that haven't been touched for 5 yrs. Good timing for a little
spring house cleaning. :)

That's not the issue. The software WON'T load without the qualifing
software present. Look for a 98 copy on e-bay would be my suggestion.

I followed your suggestion and went through all the old unpacked boxes. You
were right. I found the disc and I'm now up and running. Thanks for your
help.
