Upgrading to full version of Office

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

I need a second mail account tied to Exchange Server, but my Home and Student edition will not permit that access.

If I buy the full version and install it, will it cause a conflict with my student/teacher edition and those files? I will be dead meat if I screw up our family's existing home e-mail account?

I tried to do this on a laptop and had multiple "Identity" errors that were only resolved when I completely wiped out anything that seemed to be tied to Office on the hard drive and did a completely clean install.

I can't afford that on my home Mac.

You should use the Remove Office application in the folder
Microsoft Office 2008 > Additional Tools > Remove Office
to remove the Home and Student version. That should remove the apps but not
any existing Identities. If you then install the full version, you should be
OK.

Of course, just to be safe, I'd definitely backup any identities before I
started! ;-)

Thanks for the response -- any simple way to back up identities???

If not, I can handle more complex ways.

It's advised not to let Time Machine backup your Entourage database. If the
database is copied while being used, the backup could be corrupt. You can
set the Time Machine to exclude the Microsoft User Data folder and create an
iCal event to copy it over at night while not in use so you get one backup
daily in Time Machine.

Alternative method to use Entourage and Time Machine (does a once a day or
whatever time period you select)

Entourage and Time Machine (creates chronological backup of Identity can be
used by both Tiger and Leopard)

Diane,

Is there a folder I can just copy that has the identity in it?

I now have a full version of office. I currently am running the student/teacher edition. I need to add an exchange account for work.

My understanding is that I need to remove the student/teacher version using my master CD/DVD, and then install the full version.

I want to know the safest, easiest, most secure way to back up my personal identity so that it will be incorporated into and accessible by the full version once I install it.

Thanks,

Robert

Yes. In the Microsoft User Data folder you will find the Office 2008
Identities folder. You can have multiple Identities in this folder. Main is
the default Identity. You would backup the Main Identity unless you changed
name.

For the install, I would move the Microsoft User Data folder to the desktop.
Name it Old Microsoft User Data folder. A new Microsoft User Data folder
will be installed. Open Entourage and it will create new Main Identity. Once
you see Entourage is working, delete the new Main Identity and move your old
Identity back.

Unless you fully update, your Entourage Identity will not open.

Remember to restart after each update and install with all applications
quit. Easy way, select Check for updates under Help in the Menu bar of any
Office application. When the AutoUpdater shows up in the Dock, select "keep
in dock."

Log out/in with Shift key down. (this disables all applications including
the hidden ones)
Install and restart.
You will be able to access the AutoUpdate from the dock without opening any
applications that could cause your update to fail.
