attachments received in Outlook 2000 take a considerable
amount of time to open. The larger the file, the longer it
takes to open. Is there any way to accelerate the opening
of these attachments? Our productivity is lagging, and I
have a boss breathing down my neck to get this fixed...

Thanks in advance for your help!!

If it's that crucial to your business, I strongly suggest that you pay
someone to visit your site and fix it for you. That's what I'd do.

how fast is your network connection to your server? are you using an
exchange server?? outlook does not download attachments until they are
opened or the message is moved to a local folder. i typically see 1
minute/megabyte when opening attachments off a remote exchange server over a
vpn tunnel on a fractional t1 line. slower networks will take even longer.
you can speed up the opening by having mail delivered to the user's personal
folder on the local machine... of course this doesn't speed up the transfer,
it just doesn't show the message to the user until it is all downloaded to
his personal folder.

Dave, Thanks. That was informative. We're using an
Exchange server over a T1 line. Makes sense to have the
mail go right to a personal folder, but how can I re-
direct it to do so?

You need to adjust where the delivery is going to: (doing this from
memory...but it should be pretty accurate)

First go to Tools\Services and add a personal folder
Then go to Tools\Services and the Delivery Tab
Choose the personal folder for your delivery location.

Note, if you do this, it will download the messages off of the server
locally to the hard drive.... If you're running a backup of your server,
these messages won't be in there. Also, if you use OWA, they won't be able
to see their messages either.

You may want to try setting the mailbox to synchronize...but I'm not sure if
it download the attachments or not..........

PS. If Dirk worked for me....he would be fired in about 1 sec for such a
stupid answer.
