User ID conatining spaces and/or umlauts

Dear all,

I'm trying to get Entourage 2004 11.2.1 on Tiger to talk to a fully
patched Exchange 2003 server. While it works fine with user IDs like
"abc", I can't get it to work with "John Döe" or even "John Doe".

I have tried all combinations ("JohnDoe", "john.doe", "John_Doe", ...) I
could think of, but haven't gotten anywhere.

Is there a magic trick or something to make it work?
