Using Colors in Project

M

Mike

I wanted to backfill a cell in project using different colors, such as Red,
Green or Yellow and it looks like this is not possible. I know I can color
code the text, what I am looking for is more than this.

As an alternative, I added a new column and downloaded clipart buttons from
your site, one for red, green and yellow. The intent is to have a button for
each task based on completion dates ie. (green on target, yellow not too
good, red project may be in trouble)

If I copy these three clipart buttons into powerpoint, word, excel, they
work fine, but not in project, is this possible, or do you have a suggestion
that may allow me to color code tasks based on my criteria.

Hi,

You can color the font
You can color code the Bars of the Gantt Chart
You can represent a graphical indicator in a custom field, but only those
that Project gives you.

You cannot color code a background of a cell
You cannot have a symbol in a custom field other than the ones given by
Project.

If you want more explanation on either of the possibilities that do work,
feel free to ask.

I have never found a way to colour the cells in project however you can use
the graphical indicators that you downloaded.
insert a Text column/right click the title/select Customize Fields.
Select the text column title from the list.
In 'Custom attributes' hit the 'Value List' button and enter the values for
red, amber and green.
In the 'Values to display' hit the 'Graphical Indicators' button/highlight
the 1st left cell and engage the drop down menu and select 'equals'. In the
right cell under 'Value(s)' select the red, amber and green that we specified
in 'Custom attributes'.
Now import the gifs you downloaded and assign to corresponding value, i.e.
line 1 should read: equals/amber/yellow gif.
et voila :)
Now the 'RAG' column will have a drop down that allows you to select the
appropriate symbol.
Hope it helps,

This is fascinating.
How exactly do you "import the gifs" into the list of graphical indicators?

Hello Andy,

As Jan, I'm eager to learn how you "import the gifs you downloaded and
assign to corresponding value"
Could you give/lend/sell some more information ;-)
