using distribution list to send mail to recipient not as attachmen

I have a problem when using excel or word and I want to send to a recipient
(not as an attachment) using a distribution list. I can send to individual
names but when I choose a distribution list that I have created I get
operation failed. I have tried this on excel/outlook 2000 and 2003 with the
same results.
