Using Entourage with an Exchange Server

Y

Yvonne Suess

I am currently the sole Macintosh computer user in a Windows office. I
am currently running Mac's OS X (10.2.6). I am still running Office 98
and Outlook 2001, which run in the Mac OS 9 (Classic) mode. I am
having lots of trouble with OS 9 crashes. It seems that most of the
crashes are related to Outlook.

I see that the Office applications are all OS X compatible. However,
since I am part of an Exchange Server, I don't think Entourage will
work for me. Is this correct? I use Outlook for email, scheduling, and
tasks.

Do you know of a remedy for me? My Microsoft Office applications are
now the only applications that are running in Classic more.

Currently, Entourage has little support for Exchange. If your server is set
up for IMAP access, you would be able to access your mail using Entourage,
but tasks and calendar would not be synchronized to or connected with your
Exchange Server.

However, this will all be changing sometime this summer. Microsoft have
officially announced that a free update for Entourage X giving it full
Exchange Server support is on the way. It is scheduled for release in
Summer 2003. All currently announced information on this update can be
found here:

I am using Entourage X with Exchange server. You can set up IMAP account
with your Exchange server. This feature should be enabled on server.

Thank you,

Has anyone heard a release date for Entourage to Support MS Exchange
Server (not IMAP)? The last I heard was "sometime this summer".

Thanks

Are they going to scrap a new version of Outook for OS X?

I really can't stand Entourage....

Well, technically, I AM being forced to use it-- we have Exchange servers
and a mixed PC / MAC environment. I thought Outlook 2001 was a major step
for Microsoft's Mac department. For about a year and a half, our Mac users
had few complaints about compatability-- their email looked just like the
people running PC's... The options / setup etc. were the same... My help
desk kids basically need to be able to support two entirely different
applications now that fill one function. Why even have an Entourage? Why
not just have Mac Outlook? The other MS applications are practically
identical-- and that's a major reason they are more popular now-- Word X is
basically the EXACT same thing as Word XP. Why the inconsistency with
Outlook?

The announced support for exchange in entourage is a huge step forward, and
to be warmly applauded.

As a retiree who worked for a large organization with Exchange, I
wholeheartedly agree that this is an important step forward for Microsoft
and Mac.

But is it possible that improvements and changes in the next version of
Entourage will go beyond those for Exchange server users?

When you look at how entourage has developed since the first release, I
would expect that improvements will continue. MS have already publicly
stated (I think it's in the same press release as the Exchange announcement)
that they are also working on the next version after that one.
