Using rules

Richard Karasik

Setting up and using the rules seems excessively laborious. I am used to
being able to add a new folder on the fly- here all the folders you want to
put mail in have to be predefined. I am used to being able to choose to add
a rule using a simple right clik menu item and here I have to go all the way
through several menu items

Worst of all- the rules don't seem to run on a regular basis- I am syncing
wit h5 mail accounts and I have to manually go in and run the rules over all
the input messages, and further even when I do it that way some of the rules
seem to be ignored- so that I have to specifically pick a set of emails and
a set of rules to run.
There is no online help for rules so im at a loss to understand if this is
broken or if Apple really designed something this crappy.

Hi Richard,

I'm afraid it is not exactly clear what you are talking about. Which
application did you use prior to moving to Entourage? And are you even
talking about Entourage? I'm asking because you mention Apple, and Entourage
is a Microsoft application.

Anyway, rules are meant to run whenever you receive incoming messages. Note
that in Entourage, and in many other e-mail clients as well, rules perform
in the order in which they are listed. This means that if a message has to
be processed by rules A and B, it will go through rule A first before it
moves on to rule B. Now if rule A is for instance set up to move a message
to a folder, rule B cannot run, since the message it is supposed to process
is no longer an incoming message (it has been moved to a different folder).
This is just one (important) example of how rules work in Entourage.

There's an entire website dedicated to Entourage troubleshooting, the
Entourage Help Page. This page even has a specific subsection dedicated to
rules, so go ahead and read them if you want to find out more about how
Entourage's rules (are supposed to) work:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/rules/index.html>

Lastly, if you have any concrete questions about rules, don't hesitate to
ask them in here.

Hope this helps.
