That doesn't make sense from MS Project's point of view!

Fixed Task Type only does anything when you edit an assignment. units always
=work / duration

So edit one of the three, fix one of the three and the third one is
calculated. It is therefore impossible to fix two and edit the third because
the formula would then break which can't happen.

Different tasks may have different task types (fixed units, duration, work).
This is changed by pulling the adanced tab form the task information dialog
box. So in a view you can have different task types. However, each task may
have exactly one task type.

Think of the task type as being a switch you can use as you edit the
schedule so that you can control what Project calculates in response to your
changes. It always calculates something - it's up to you to make sure it's
the right thing. Let's say you're editing a resource assignment from 100%
to 50%. Are you doing that because the resource needs to split his time
with something else or because the task really doesn't require as much
effort as you though it would yet you don't need it to finish any earlier?
In the first case you would set the task type to fixed work before making
the edit, letting the duration double. In the second case you would set it
to fixed duration so the work estimate is reduced. Next edit might be done
for a different reason requiring it to first be set to one of the other task
types.
