Very slow Newsgroup download

often when I download messages from a newsgroup, Outlook express with take
30-60 seconds and lockup the computer until its done. When I can look an
CPU usage it takes 100% of the processing.

What can I do to set up OE so that it doesnt take so long to download
messages?

your thoughts appreciated
