Vexing Login Issues

S

SMS@UT

Heres the situation:

Server:

Windows 2K3
MDAC 2.8 RTM
Project Server 2003 SP1
WSS SP1
SQL 2K SP3a

Client:

Windows Xp SP2
IE 6
MDAC 2.8 SP1
Project Professional SP1

The issue:

1. Server: Can access PWA via IE6 on the server using Admin credentials
(both Domain & PS) - CANNOT access PWA using Windows credentials outside of
Admins.
2. Windows XP SP2 - Project Professional - CANNOT access using either
Windows credentials or PS creds- 5001 Error Database cannot be accessed.
3. Windows XP SP2 - PWA - Can login (after failing pass-thru LGNINT.ASP)
using PS creds and Admin Windows Creds but not any other credentials (i.e.
non-Admin)

Ran EditSite and passed with flying colors including Database.

Application logs show successful login by ProJectServerUser account

IIS Logs a little more revealing extract of typical external failed access
(via PWA) follows:

Now before Gary Chefetz chimes in (If I promise to buy your books Gary will
you give me the answer - It would be well worth it!)

Ive checked the permissions (both NTFS and IIS) - Everything checks out - I
even compared this against a working development site - The only difference
between the two is the production site is all on one box whereas the
development site has a separate SQL box).

Ive even called MS PS - And after 1.5hrs and telling the tech on the other
end how I fixed one issue (this was the mixed IIS Directory security
settings) Ive kinda despaired and doubt I have the patience or the fortitude
to fight up the chain

And before someone suggest re-install - This is try number 3 on the same box
- Same box same set of conditions everytime - Cant reinstall from bare metal
as server also provides other production services which cannot be interuppted.

Ive burned hours searching GOOGLE YAHOO and this discussion thread Ive tried
a number of suggestions and exhausted the KB articles (which I am presently
assembling into a troublehooting guide for other poor admins out there).

Ive also double checked the metabase and authentication modes - And checked
and compared the Security config settings.

The only big difference between the two is that the development box happily
listens on the default port for SQL 1433 - Whereas the Production box does
not - But that cannot be the answer because I can get limited access external
to the box.

And finally the Sharepoint side works as expected for now - Since I cant
connect via Project Professional (yes its running SP1 as well) I cant attempt
to publish and check for the corresponding Sharepoint Site.

So if anyone out there can provide the answer I will offer a reward (in
Gary's case Ill buy his books!).

Dying out here in Austin, Texas and quickly running out of beer money cus
this issue is driving me to drink!!!

Cheers

It's really difficult to say what's going on here without knowing:

1) What are the other production apps running on the server?
2) Where is the MDAC directory in relationship to Project Server?
3) Do you see errors in the application log when you attempt to logon?
4) Did you add the Project Server URL to the WSS managed paths exclusions?

I wouldn't rule out the port as part of the problem just yet. Did you try
switching the port to 1433 to see if it made a difference?

Digging deeper:

Where is MDAC in relation in the IIS tree structure and where is Project
Server virtual directory in the IIS tree structure?
Have you enabled all unsigned ISAPI filters for this application server?
How is directory security set for pjdbcomm.dll?
How about msadcs.dll?

It appears that your server name has a dash in it? Is this correct? I've
seen problems related to dashes in server names. I'm not certain whether
there are any potential conflicts with SMS, but nothing turns up in the KB.

SMS@UT

Gary,

Sorry it took awhile to get back to you - Ahh the life of a Server Admin -
ANyway in response to your queries for additional info:

The MDAC and the Project Server both live at the root of the virtual server
as virtual directories - As stated earlier the MSADC dll live on the C:
partition and the Project Server application lives on the G: partition.

I have enabled all unsigned ISAPI filters.

The permissions of pjdbcomm.dll are as follows:

IIS - Anonymous, Integrated and Basic
NTFS - Admins, SYSTEM and Users - Full Control

The permissions on msadc.dll are as follows:

IIS: Intergrated and basic (note: the virtual dir. has no perms set)
NTFS: Admin, System - Full control
Users: Read/Execute

One minor item of note the Project Server is installed to a virtual server
instance and not the Default Website of IIS6 - In some of my digging I came
across a veiled ref. to that being a req. I believe I can move or if
recommended reinstall to the Default virtual server.

The dash in the server name is not the FQDN of the Project Server - A cname
has been established for the Project Server Site. I have read and seen KB's
that make reference to an issue with underscores.

Hope that clarifies.

And again thanks for your assistance.

Now before Gary Chefetz chimes in (If I promise to buy your books Gary
will
you give me the answer - It would be well worth it!)

Ive checked the permissions (both NTFS and IIS) - Everything checks
out -
I
even compared this against a working development site - The only
difference
between the two is the production site is all on one box whereas the
development site has a separate SQL box).

Ive even called MS PS - And after 1.5hrs and telling the tech on the
other
end how I fixed one issue (this was the mixed IIS Directory security
settings) Ive kinda despaired and doubt I have the patience or the
fortitude
to fight up the chain

And before someone suggest re-install - This is try number 3 on the
same
box
- Same box same set of conditions everytime - Cant reinstall from bare
metal
as server also provides other production services which cannot be
interuppted.

Ive burned hours searching GOOGLE YAHOO and this discussion thread Ive
tried
a number of suggestions and exhausted the KB articles (which I am
presently
assembling into a troublehooting guide for other poor admins out
there).

Ive also double checked the metabase and authentication modes - And
checked
and compared the Security config settings.

The only big difference between the two is that the development box
happily
listens on the default port for SQL 1433 - Whereas the Production box
does
not - But that cannot be the answer because I can get limited access
external
to the box.

And finally the Sharepoint side works as expected for now - Since I
cant
connect via Project Professional (yes its running SP1 as well) I cant
attempt
to publish and check for the corresponding Sharepoint Site.

So if anyone out there can provide the answer I will offer a reward (in
Gary's case Ill buy his books!).

Dying out here in Austin, Texas and quickly running out of beer money

this issue is driving me to drink!!!

Project Server and MDAC need to be on the same virtual server.

Gary,

Sorry it took awhile to get back to you - Ahh the life of a Server Admin -
ANyway in response to your queries for additional info:

The MDAC and the Project Server both live at the root of the virtual
server
as virtual directories - As stated earlier the MSADC dll live on the C:
partition and the Project Server application lives on the G: partition.

I have enabled all unsigned ISAPI filters.

The permissions of pjdbcomm.dll are as follows:

IIS - Anonymous, Integrated and Basic
NTFS - Admins, SYSTEM and Users - Full Control

The permissions on msadc.dll are as follows:

IIS: Intergrated and basic (note: the virtual dir. has no perms set)
NTFS: Admin, System - Full control
Users: Read/Execute

One minor item of note the Project Server is installed to a virtual server
instance and not the Default Website of IIS6 - In some of my digging I
came
across a veiled ref. to that being a req. I believe I can move or if
recommended reinstall to the Default virtual server.

The dash in the server name is not the FQDN of the Project Server - A
cname
has been established for the Project Server Site. I have read and seen
KB's
that make reference to an issue with underscores.

Hope that clarifies.

And again thanks for your assistance.
