Although I have HTML as my default format, I seldom receive HTML formatted
messages as such. Often they come through as Plain text. What am I doing
wrong? Is there a Rich Text format I could use?
The fact that you have HTML as default format means it's default for SENDING
- composing new messages. It just means that when you click the New Message
button a new message window will open for you with the HTML button selected
already. It has nothing to do with receiving messages.
You receive messages in the format they were sent. If they were sent HTML,
you'll get them as HTML, included inserted graphics. If they were sent as
"complex HTML" (i.e. HTML with tables and/or linked graphics on webservers)
you'll get them as HTML as long as you have unchecked that pref in Security
preferences. In Entourage 2004, you won't get the linked web pages
(pictures) unless the sender is in your Address Book and you check that
pref, but you can click "Download Pictures" in the message bar to get them.
What you're missing is not HTML at all. It's RTF as sent by Outlook Windows
(maybe Apple Mail). That's a proprietary format which is not read by
Entourage, so you get the alternative plain text instead and a useless
winmail.dat "attachment" from Outlook (which just possibly might be
containing a real attachment). Ask your correspondents in Outlook to send to
you as HTML if they want you to see the formatting. They can do that. And in
the newest version of Outlook - 2003 - the default format is now HTML, not
RTF, so as time goes on you should be seeing more and more of this and less
of the plain text substitution for RTF. Unfortunately, users of Outlook 2002
and earlier cannot set "HTML" for you in their address book. (They can set
"plain text" to avoid the winmail.dat obscuring of attachments, however.)
