Viewing Mathematical Formulae

I am a student at university but whenever I try to view any files that
contain mathematical symbols my version of office doesnt recognise them and
replaces them with other symbols? E.g a less than sign cannot be viewed. Does
anyone know what the problem is and how I fix it, I'm sure it used to work
previously.
