Watermarks

I am doing a 20 page booklet and I need a different watermark on every page
starting on page 5. I know how to not print the watermark on pages 1-4
(different first page, etc.) however, it doesn't allow me to change the
watermark after page 1. I have made each page a different section, different
first page but it seems that once a watermark is in, I can't override it. I
know I can insert photos for each page, wash them out and insert text
overtop. But this option seems extremely time consuming and not practical.
Any ideas?

What you have described is the definition of a watermark.

So what you are saying in your short remark that I cannot put a different
watermark (i.e. different picture, different wordart, different anything) on
every page. Only one picture or wordart or text can flow through the whole
document?

No, what I'm saying is that, before Word 2002, the way you had to create a
watermark was to do just what you describe: open the header, insert a
graphic, wash it out, send it Behind Text, etc. There's no reason you can't
have a different one on every page if you make each page a separate section,
but you will have to do it manually (you can't use the Format | Background |
Printed Watermark feature), and it would be much better to avoid all those
section breaks (which can cause pagination woes and attract corruption) and
just anchor a washed-out photo, sent Behind Text, to one of the paragraphs
on each page.

The whole idea of a header is that it appears in every page (or selection of
pages). If you want individual watermarks on each page then insert them
individually as behind text images on the pages themselves. A watermark is
simply a pale graphic behind the text.

It might be possible - I haven't tested it - to conditionally insert
pre-prepared images in the header according to the page number, provided you
number the images files in a manner that can be used in a field eg
Watermark5.jpg, Watermark6.jpg etc. Then in the header put a conditional
field:

{IF {Page} > 4 "{IncludePicture "C:\\path\\Watermark{Page}.jpg"}"}

You will have to set the default picture insertion method to behind text for
this document. Tools > options > edit

Allow me to jump in with a question.

When I insert a picture into a word document and set it behind text, I am
losing all further access to the picture, and all means of modifying it.

Is there a way of bringing the picture back to the front, and do any of
several things such as delete it, resize it, change brightness/contrast,
crop, ...

(I may have asked this question in another way. Please bear with me while I
figure out the etiquette of this forum)

You can grab any drawing object, even one that has been sent behind text,
using the Select Objects tool on the Drawing toolbar.
