What determines whether contacts are duplicates when importing?

When importing contacts from, say, Excel, I am given a choice to "replace
duplicates with item imported." What determines whether the existing contact
is a duplicate, and will thus be replaced with the new (presumably updated)
information? First and last name? Other information?
