My brother keeps sending me mail messages with a winmail.dat file
attached. I have tried to open it from Entourage 2004 and no joy. He
thinks it is a picture attached the my ISP or mail program is trashing.

A winmail.dat file appears in Rich Text (not HTML or plain) messages sent
from Outlook on a PC. Entourage cannot read the Outlook Rich Text format so
you just see the winmail.dat file which stores the Rich Text information.
Your brother should change his Outlook settings to send mail to you in
either plain text or HTML format.

The winmail.dat file is Microsoft proprietary format from some older
Microsoft Windows-based mail systems. As far as I understand it encapsulates
the text message as well as the attachments.

There is a freeware utility that will help you open these files. You'll find
