Yesterday I created a presentation with quite alot large wav files that
should play when I clicked the links. The total size was just above 1GB.
Today I cant open it.
Why weren´t the files linked instead of beeing embedded?

You can link instead of embed. Go to Tools > Option.
Under General tab, modify the "Link sounds with file size greater than __ kb"
PPT will allows embeding of wave file.

See:

Depending on what you have set in Tools > Options > General and how large the
WAV files are, they may be embedded or linked. Nevertheless, a file that is 1GB
in size can be expected to cause problems on most systems unless you have far
above average resources available.
