What is the point, then, of Entourage for theHome and Student Edition?

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I read through most of the post, however, I ended up purchasing the H&S version for a few reasons, mainly the crazy price of the other two versions. I have a few issues with entourage, I am living with the fact that it does not support Exchange mail, because I am issued a Blackberry by my job. But it is also a crazy notion on the part of MS, because I know a lot of colleges also use Exchange servers, is to ask a college student to purchase the a full versions. Another grip I have is that it does not work well at all with G-Mail.

If you don't like the licensing then let Microsoft know you'd like to
see it changed for future versions by using the Help --> Send Feedback
mechanism in any Office application. No one here can really do anything
about it.

While I may or may not agree with the new licensing I can understand it.
The licensing changed because the EULA changed. Instead of the lowest
cost price point being limited to only educational consumers (Office
2004 Student & Teacher version) Office 2008 Home & Student was opened to
home consumers. This allows more people to legally buy the product, most
of whom don't need Exchange.

Exchange is a product designed for corporate institutions. Educational
institutions have adopted it for their mail servers and they pay volume
licensing fees just like corporate institutions.

The institution (corporate or educational) is expected to purchase
clients. If the educational institutions expect their end-users to pay
for the clients then that's an agreement between the students/faculty
and the school, not Microsoft. The institution has the option to
purchase and distribute just the Entourage client for its users. (Check
with yours to make sure they already don't.)

Also, keep in mind that Windows users are in the same boat with Outlook
2007. It must be purchased separately or as part of a more expensive
Office for Windows package. It's not part of the Home & Student version
of Office 2007 for Windows.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Bill. I see the point a little bit better now, and I see now why they did it. However, I still have issues when I try to use it with G-Mail. In the G-Mail help area, it really does not give thorough instructions about setting it up. I also have some issues when setting up other e-mail such as Yahoo.

Again, be sure to send in your feedback to Microsoft. They've changed
things before due to customer feedback.

As for Gmail, have a look at my two blog posts for setup:

"Connect Entourage 2004 to Gmail’s IMAP service"
<http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2007/11/connect_entourage_2004_to_gmails_imap_service.html>

"Create Gmail labels and make Entourage folders"
<http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2007/11/create_gmail_labels_and_make_entourage_folders.html>

Although these were written for Entourage 2004, they are still valid for
Entourage 2008. Be sure to read the comments. Some folks have left some
good advice.

Hope this helps!
