What is the purpose for meta ="GENERATOR" and "ProgId"

Hi,

I should have asked this question long ago, and that is, what is the purpose
for meta tag = generator and progID?

And will there be any adverse effects if I removed them?

This question just came to me again when I was comparing the differences
between pages produced by FP and EWD. I found, by default, FP would add
these two tags and EWD will not.

So it is because....??

Many thanks in advance.

Those tags indicate which program was used to last edit the page. Removing
the tags will make no difference. There are settings in FP2003 for
removing these tags -
Tools->Optimise HTML (tick the checkbox)
Tools->Page Options - Authoring tab (clear the checkbox)

As Ronx said, they serve no purpose other than to advertise FrontPage. Turn
them off.

The generator and progID tags added to html files by Office applications, allow other Office
applications to determine which Office Application created the HTML file.

Hi,

Thanks for the further clarifications from all of you.

Come to think about it, it might also related to those options (can't
remember correct names) such as, check if Office is the editor for .... and
use xxx to open the file...

In any case, I will delete all of them and already turn them off in FP.

Many thanks.
