what layout does the excel file need to be in to import contacts

I am trying to import contacts into Outlook 2003 and I am not getting
success. I keep getting an error stating that I must use Microsoft Excel to
name the range of data you want to import?

I have headers on each column and do not get the option to map them out once
the error pops up.

Have you named the range? That's an Excel function. Select the range (data
block) you want to export and type a name for it in the little white window
above the spreadsheet.
