What set the category?

Why does every message that comes into my inbox have a preeassigned
category- the same one.

These are messages that are not subject to any rules or mailing lists

Shouldn't the category be none?

Check the Mailing List Manager. These run before other rules.

The messages that are being assigned to a category are not related to any
defined mailing list or rule.

They are not from any sender that is in my address book but nevertheless
they get assigned to a user defined category.

If I had no assigned categories, what would a incoming message being
assigned?

What you are describing is not possible. Something has to be setting the
category. Have you tried deleting the category?

You are right. I missed it! I had a rule setting all messages to a one
category
