With Outlook 6 now, when I doubleclick an attachment, I only get
choices to Save to Disk or Cancel. What happened to Open? I used to
get Open as an option.
Thanks
You need to save the file first. Open actually saved the file but then
immediately executed it (if executable; otherwise, it tried to find
whatever program was associated with that filetype for the attached
file). By forcing the save to disk without an immediate execute, your
anti-virus software has a chance to check the file before it gets
executed. The Save As dialog also acts as a double prompt to ensure
users really do want to run the file rather than accidentally hitting
the wrong button in the dialog. Users might be sloppy and simply
execute an attachment without ever checking it for viruses. The double
prompt (Save As and then *YOU* choose to run it) is like the flip-cover
on a switch to ensure you really meant to flip the switch and just
didn't hit it by accident. You can thank all the peurile scum
proliferating viruses for the added protection in Outlook along with the
expense, time, and resources consumed to run an anti-virus program.
