What's wrong with my message formatting?

When I start a new email my keystrokes are invisible unless I go to the
message formatting drop-down menu on the toolbar (which is set to HTML as
default), and select "plain text". Suddenly the text I've typed appears.
If I then switch the message formatting drop-down menu back to HTML it works
fine. Anyone have any ideas? This only began recently, a couple of days ago.

Are you using a theme with white letters or a white lettered font?
Look in tools } options | Mail format tab ... Stationary and Fonts.

Nope, theme is black font on plain background.

try changing to a different theme and then back again.
