When an exchange server fails

We have outlook 2003 retrieving mail from one exchange server and several
pop3s. A problem occurs if the exchange server is down. Specifically,
Outlook will not sort incoming mail into various local folders. Is there
any way to overcome this?

If you have also a IMAP or POP3 account (or how do you receive mails if
Exchange is down?), just create a new profile containing a PST file and your
email account, then start with the second profile if the server is down.
Later you my move the mails to your mailbox.

Usually, if you configure Outlook and Exchange to have offline access, it
should display your offline mailbox instead of the server.

I suppose that would work, although I'd sure like to automate the process.
I'm using a remote host service, MAPI over HTTP and for the most part, it
works well enough. I wanted some redundancy as well as the ability to use
the host's web interface and have my mail organized the same as when I'm in
the office. Of course now, I find out they have an upper limit on the
number of rules I can create. I may give up on the idea of connecting to an
exchange server. Too much trouble for too little gain. :-(
