When deleting messages, don't want to automatically open an unread message

I appreciate any advice here for a small but annoying matter. After
reading and deleting an Entourage message, the program automatically
opens the message above or below the deleted message. When I have a
whole stack of unread mail, this means that the program defaults to
opening another unread message. I'd rather it defaults to the top of
the already-read stack, as it does on my wife's version, so that I can
choose when to open a new message. Playing around with read
preferences doesn't seem to help.

Again, I appreciate advice here.

No? My Read prefs are set to close the message window after deleting an
open message, and my copy of Entourage does not behave as you describe.
