When do rules get executed?

I have a set of rules for my hotmail account which move incoming emails into
their respective folders. If I "select all" of the emails in my inbox and
manually run all rules, the rules are executed as I would expect. However,
unless I manually execute the rules, they never appear to execute.

Shouldn't rules be applied automatically to all incoming emails when they
come in?

When you created the rules, did you create them as Hotmail rules or POP?

The rules were created as Hotmail rules. I think the rules themselves are
ok because they work as expected when I execute them manually.

Are you selecting run all rules, or do you select each rule?

See Why Rules don't work for some suggestions:

Yes, I'm selecting run all rules.

My POP account rules run automatically, but the Hotmail rules don't. The
Hotmail rules did run automatically at one time, but I must have done
something to keep them from doing so. I just can't think of what I could do
that would let rules run manually, but not automatically.

I'll check out the link. Thanks.

Make sure you create the rules under the Hotmail tab in Rules. Also check
rules to be sure the folders have not been reset to Inbox.
