when sendin a distribution email it says does not recognize name

I created a distribution list. I named it Mason 1. I select the
distribution list and then send new message to contact. I then fill in the
subject line and then the rest of the email. When I click on send a box pops
up saying "Microsoft office outlook does not recognize Mason 1". Then it
says select the address to use above a box and in the box it says "No
Suggestions". Did I not enter the distribution list right? If someone could
help me I would really appreciate it.
