When will there be updates to Entourage?

Does anyone know. It seems I've had the same version for OSX for years
now...and there is room for improvement, etc. When is the new version coming
out?

No doubt Microsoft is working on a Universal binary version of Office, and
that will take some time, since it is such a huge piece of software. The
switch to Intel processors has to have thrown a monkey wrench into their
update plans; otherwise, I'd imagine we'd be hearing about an update right
about now. With the Intel switch thrown in, my bet is on sometime late next
year.

The better question is when they will ditch it altogether and give Mac users
Outlook so we can really use both platforms in the same office. I¹ve been
trying for weeks to get a simple answer to synchronizing Outlook and
Entourage mail and calendars. Nada.

I can buy Exchange server, which is ridiculous for a small office.

Or I can suffer.

Pheh!

For small offices I highly recommend going with a hosted exchange solution.
For $6-12/user/month you get full support for calendars, contacts, over the
air ActiveSync, and even Blackberry support (costs extra). To get a decent
exchange setup running in house you're going to drop close to $10k when all
is said and done unless you're willing to seriously cut corners.

You could always go linux for mail and it would be cheap and reliable, but
good luck getting any linux groupware solution to work. It would be nice if
M$ made a decent client for the Mac... But don't hold your breath, I've been
fighting the Mac/Exchange integration battle for years and its a rough one!

Crunch the numbers and you'll go hosted, anything else is just crazy for a
small office (IMHO). I run an in-house Exchange setup for a larger
organization and its worth it but I'd never even consider it for less than
30-40 users.

First I¹ve heard of this. Who runs a hosted Exchange service?

Thanks!

There is one update for Entourage X. Download and install the latest Office

I just downloaded and installed update 10.1.7 and now Entourage X has
version number 10.1.6 and there are no obvious changes.

Update 10.1.7 was mainly for Word and Excel if I understand the Read Me
correctly.

Bill - I second that comment and description on hosted service from
Matt. We use an exchange service that is hosted with Intermedia
(www.intermedia.net) and they provide excellent service and support.

I woul go even further than Matt and say that for 40 users (around what
we have) it still makes sense to go hosted rather than in-house given
redundancy (don't depend on your ISP) and maintenance/updates (you will
almost always have the latest setup).

Also - It integrates Entourage pretty well although not fully since you
dont have support for tasks and a couple of other items. shared
calendards and contact lists work though as well as public folder
discussions (non-task items).

I had very bad luck with hosted Exchange for an office of Entourage users.
Ultimately, our service provider said that it really couldn't be done --
that some functions (delegation specifically) just wouldn't work right with
a hosted solution.

This was several months ago, and of course there have been updates to both
Entourage and Exchange. And it's possible that this service provider didn't
have deep Mac-specific knowledge. What worked great for this particular
client though was Kerio MailServer. It's inexpensive, runs on Windows XP or
Mac OS X, and it's simple to administer. I highly recommend it for a small
office of Mac users.

I found intermedia quickly searching google for exchange server hosting.

I believe they also offer hosted SharePoint. Does that work? The attraction
would be sharing things like project management and scheduling software, as
well as building PowerPoint presentations as a group.

Probably too good to be true?

I ended up going with mailstreet because we needed Blackberry (BES) support.
If you don't, 1 and 1 is cheaper and they look pretty good.

Jeff is right in that you can't delegate properly with the hosted providers
(unless they have VPN support). I've got a couple of long posts floating
around about the PIA it was to get that working even locally. In most cases
however its not needed, you can still give others permission to access your
folders without using the delegate function.

If you were really desperate to delegate you could always delegate from a PC
though I personally didn't think that was an acceptable solution ;-).
