When working 'online' Entourage freezes when syncronising with Exchange

I've been using Entourage 10.1.4 for a few months. About a month ago I
opened Entourage as normal one morning, and then the application
stopped responding as soon as it tries to connect to the Exchange
Server (latest version).

What I had to do was choose "Work Offline" as soon as the application
launched, and then re-create my Entourage profile after deleting a
heap of my emails using webmail.

This seemed to work for a while, but this morning (about a month
later) it is doing the same thing. I have over 1000 messages in my
inbox, and I cant really delete too many more. At the moment I am
forced to work offline and check mail manually - rather than the
auto-sync when working online.

Any ideas? This is a very annoying problem!
