Where is project data stored?

I moved from one Mac to another. I took my MUD folder with me. All my mail
and contacts show up, but not any projects. Also, all my mail messages, which
I had painstakingly assigned to projects, show "None" in the Projects column
in the inbox.

If it's not a question of just locating the data, what would be the proper
procedure to migrate Entourage to a new machine so as to preserve project
data? I can go back to the old machine if needed.

Entourage 2004, OS X 10.4.

Hi,

Project Data is stored in two specific locations. The first one, and by far
the most important one, is your Entourage database, located in your MUD
folder. If you transfer that folder to a different computer, you should
theoretically keep all your information intact, which is why I'm slightly
puzzled by the fact that the association to projects got lost during the
transfer. Could it be that you are using an IMAP mail account? In that case,
I don't know if Entourage will use the information stored in its database,
or if it will just download the messages from the IMAP folder again, which
would explain things. You see, Entourage saves the project association of
emails in its database; IMAP servers don't know anything about these
projects. So if Entourage were to download messages from the IMAP server
again, it would be logical for the messages to lose their project and
category settings.

The other location is definable by the user, but it's usually
~/Documents/Office Projects, where Entourage stores aliases to files related
to projects. This folder is not relevant in this specific case.

Thank you.

It is an Exchange server. What would be the procedure for trying to restore
the projects? I'm guessing removing Office and then reinstalling, and then,
before launching Entourage for the first time, slipping the old MUD folder in
place so that hopefully Entourage reads it before the server downloads the
messages? Or will the server overwrite them anyway?

Hi Dave,

I have no first-hand experience with Exchange servers, so you might want to
wait until someone else can give you proper feedback on this. However, I can
tell you already that reinstalling Office is not going to change anything at
all. Entourage stores its data in the MUD folder, and that folder, the only
one that matters in this context, is not touched at all during the uninstall
process. If the project association is still intact on your other Mac, then
transferring the MUD folder from that Mac to your other computer should do
it. As I've said, I'm not exactly sure how Exchange proceeds then; but the
information in your database (project status and so on, i.e. the information
that is stored on your computer and not on your Exchange server) should
*not* be overwritten by the Exchange synchronisation, unless you
specifically instruct Entourage to do so. Sorry for not being more helpful.
