Which Outbox should Entourage use?

I'm trying to send mail from my Exchange Account, and when I send it, the
message is going to the Outbox for my SMTP account (which is the Outbox
under On My Computer) instead of the outbox under my Exchange Account.

This hasn't been a problem until today as we had to change some settings on
our Exchange Server to stop people relaying through the server. Now I can
not send even though the account for the email I am sending is the Exchange
Server Account....

Entourage always uses the local Outbox (the one under "On My Computer"),
even if your IMAP or Exchange Server also has an Outbox.

I don't see why this would create a problem. Even though it goes through
the local Outbox, that's only a visual thing. It still recognizes your
account settings and will send through whatever SMTP server you specified.

What you need to do is go to Tools -> Accounts, open your Exchange account,
click the "Mail" tab, click the "Advanced Sending Options" button, and
toggle the option for "SMTP server requires authentication". Click OK, and
you should be able to send mail.

It turns out that it was one of the changes that was made on the server - in
an attempt to shut down some relaying from the outside world (I HATE those
people) we inadvertently shut down a critical option in the SMTP protocol on
the Exchange sever that prevented internal relaying for authenticated
users...

We turned it on and it all started working again. PHEW!
