Why can't Entourage send mail?

I have used Entourage for years without any problems. Now all of a sudden I
am getting the following message when I try to send mail:

Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't support any of the available
authentication methods. Error ­17897

I have tried resetting the smtp settings (I use .mac) but nothing seems to
work.

I had this problem one time a week ago and finally fixed it by deleting the
account and then immediately readding it. But that is kinda of a pain to
keep doing indefinitely. Any thoughts?

To further confuse the issue, Entourage can obviously post to the newgroups
even though it can¹t send mail! ARRRGGGHHH
