Why can't I simply toggle Guides in PowerPoint 2003?

In previous versions of PowerPoint I was able to toggle the guides on and off
with ctl-g. Now it opens a dialog box that requires checking and unchecking
boxes. Is there any way to return to the old ctl-g on/off switch?
