why can't you put hyperlinks in entourage mail

Why can't I put hyperlinks in entourage mail. I like to put my website in my
signature and entourage doesn't seem to be able to make that a hyperlink
(when you look in the help files under hyperlink it isn't even listed, so I
don't think I'm imagining this). Also when you cut and paste a document that
has links into mail, all the links are listed next to what was a hyperlink,
but not as a clickable link, so it looks like this:

www.abc.com <http://www.abc.com>

The key is to include the http:// prefix when specifying web addresses.
That's why the second link in the last line of your message worked and the
first one did not. If you type a link into an HTML message, it will
virtually always be clickable; it will most of the time with plain text
messages as well.

When I copy and paste a hyperlink from a word document it is in the form of
http://www.yadayada.com and instead of being clickable, when you paste it
into entourage, the http:www.... just appears next to the phrase that was
originally hyperlinked and it is not clickable. This happens when it is in
an html message and non html. And there is no command that I can find in the
entourage menu to insert a link like there is in outlook and outlook express.
So I can't put the name of my company YadaYada Corp. and then highlight it
and insert a link to http://www.yadayada. com.

If you type a URL, starting with http://, Entourage will automatically make
it a clickable URL in the preview pane or in the message window. It's true
that you cannot directly insert a hyperlink the way you can in Outlook or
Outlook Express, but there are two ways of getting that result nevertheless:

1) you don't mention which version of Entourage you are using. If it's 2004,
and Entourage is set as your default email client, you can compose your
email message in Word 2004, with hyperlinks, and then go to File>Send
To>Mail Recipient (HTML). This will encode your current Word document in
HTML format and pass it on to Entourage.

2) you can use Paul Berkowitz' free AppleScript Send Hyperlinks X, which you
can find here (instructions included in the readme file):

http://scriptbuilders.net/files/makehyperlinksx2.2.1.html

As I've said, there is currently no way to insert hyperlinks in Entourage
itself, which I think is a grave omission. And it has been mentioned a
number of times already, so hopefully, Microsoft will listen at some point.
For the time being, however, Paul's script does the job for me.

I tried that, it doesn't work.

this works (although it's a royal pain)

I downloaded it, but it won't open.
Is there a trick to this?

Yup, like it makes entourage unusable for serious correspondance.

Thanks for the help.
And it has been mentioned a

It works fine here, and for most people. You do realize that as you are
typing the message, it will not appear to be a clickable link? It will stay
regular text as long as you are composing the message. However, when you
send the message to people, it will be clickable. You can test this by
saving the message to Drafts and viewing it there (in the preview pane,
don't open the message). You will see that the link is now clickable.

Just a note--Michel gave you a link to a script. It was clickable, right?
Michel wrote that message in Entourage, and I can guarantee you that he did
nothing more to make that link clickable than copy and paste it into the
message. He did not jump through any hoops like using Word or a script.

The script is inside a Stuffit archive (.sit file). You'll need the free
Stuffit Expander <http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/> to unpack the
script. And just to illustrate once again what Daiya said: the link for
Stuffit Expander is not clickable right now as I'm composing this message in
Entourage. However, as soon as I'll send it, it will become clickable, and I
did nothing but copy and paste the link from my web browser into the message
window. I should add, just to clarify, that Entourage doesn't "add"
anything: the fact that it's clickable results from most email clients'
ability to detect URLs and to display them as hyperlinks. Entourage itself
doesn't add a hyperlink; however, because I've simply copied the URL and
included the http:// bit, I'm telling the email client or web browser which
you are using to read this message that this text is supposed to be
displayed as a hyperlink.
