Why do attachment icons have such a microscopic area to click on?

Why to the attachment icons in an outlook incoming message have such a small
area that cursor can click on to open the icon - I have to click on an area
only a few pixels across in the lower left corner of the icon, that
highlights the attachment, then I can click on the highlighted name of the
attachment. It is a two step process, and the "sweet spot" is microscopic.
Even right-clicking on the message name does not produce an option to "open
attachments." Surely there must be an easier way to open an attachment than
maneuvering the mouse cursor over such a small corner of the icon in the
message header. Help.
