Why do names in a distribution list disappear?

I add contact names to a distribution list, and save the list, but if I close
Outllook the names in the distribution list disappear when I reopen Outlook.

What is your Outlook version and information store? Is the Outlook address
book service installed and working correctly?

Using Outlook 2003. I do not know how to answer the question about the
information store and the book service. I do not know what they are.

However, I found the missing distribution list in Contacts. Since I wanted
it to be in "Contacts from (e-mail address removed)", I copied it to that location.
Now, it now longer disappears.

What is strange is that another distribution list I created in "Contacts
from (e-mail address removed)" did not disappear. I do not know why this inconsistent
behavior took place.

I am somewhat new to Outlook, as you have probably surmised, but I am
learning.
