Why do Office apps take so long to switch directories?

Apps like Word and Outlook slow to a crawl when I need to open or save a file
in anything but the default directory. It can take 45 seconds just to find
the D: drive, another 45 seconds to open a directory and another 45 seconds
to get to the next directory. I've uninstalled everything I can think of,
checked for viruses, de-fragmented disks, asked PC people to look at my
system. All for naught. The Windows Explorer is fine at handling files, but
as soon as I work with files in Office, my productivity goes to nothing.
I've got plenty of RAM and plenty of virtual memory. Please help!

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
