Why does Entourage often crash when deleting e-mails?

This problem appears to be a shortcoming of Entourage's inner guts. Microsoft says to relaunch Entourage with the option key held down to "rebuild the database."

This is an ongoing pain in the butt. I've never had another e-mail program that required constant "database rebuilding."

I find myself having to do this frequently. Does anyone know a reason why? Does anyone know anything helpful at all about this subject?

Are you saying you are getting error messages from Entourage to rebuild? Did
you upgrade Entourage from an older version by importing your Identity? How
big is your database? How much free space on your hard drive? Any info you
can give us will help us understand your problem. You should not be getting
these messages all the time.

First, rebuilding your database is not a cure all. Some times all it does is
allow you to open the Identity so you can salvage your data to create a new
Identity.

I want you to do some tests for me. Rather than use Verify database using
the Database Utility, I want you to export your data as an Entourage archive
(.rge) file.

Under File --> Export --> select the default option export as Entourage
archive (.rge) file all items.

If this does not complete, you have corruption. If it does complete, this
tells me your database is good but let's do one more test to verify. This
next step will also help if the export as .rge fails since it will identify
the folder with corruption.

Download this script "Export as MBOX" files. Place the script in the
Entourage Script Menu Items folder. Select the script and let it run. It
fails on a folder with corruption. (you can watch the results in the Finder
by clicking on the Entourage Archives folder on the Desktop.)

Export folders as MBOX files (includes subfolders)

If you do find there is corruption for full details on creating a new
Identity see:

How to manually move your data. (when import fails and/or you need to move
to a new Identity same version or revert to an older version)
