Why does on-disk file size change after viewing a file?

I've got a collection of PowerPoint files - all different vintages (PPT97
and up). Some are PPT; some are PPS.

We're synchronizing the files across a set of machines, and we're checking
file sizes. Something weird has turned up - the file size of some of the
files (particularly PPS) will change after it's been viewed once. Usually it
gets smaller by a little bit. I'm looking at this using the Properties
option in Windows Explorer.

Needless to say, this causes the file to get transferred again to
synchronize, since the main file hasn't been viewed.

Why is this happening? It's happened if I just use PowerPoint Viewer (97
and/or 2003), and if I play the file thru PowerPoint 2003 itself (without
saving the file afterwards).

Thanks. Something spooky for Halloween, I guess...
